Bank-Specific Authority

Power of Attorney to Close Bank Account in Dubai

Authorise a trusted person to visit the bank, submit the closure request, sign the forms the bank permits and follow up until the account is closed.

The wording is tailored to the selected bank and the exact authority you want to grant, while remaining subject to the bank’s own approval, identity checks and attendance requirements.

Important

Before notarisation, confirm that the bank accepts a POA for account closure, as some banks require the account holder to attend in person or provide extra documents before closing the account.

What is a Bank Account Closing Power of Attorney?

It is a specialised, limited POA that allows another person to assist you with closing a personal bank account in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE.

The authority may include visiting the bank, submitting the closure request, signing the required declarations or documents and following up until the bank confirms that the account has been closed.

The scope should be stated clearly, because some banks will not accept overly general wording for account closure.

When is this POA useful?

It is commonly used when the account holder is outside the UAE, cannot attend the branch, or needs a trusted person to complete local closure steps.

It is also helpful where the bank requires a formal authorisation before accepting the closure request or where the account has historical matters that need formal follow-up.

  • You are outside the UAE and need someone to act on your behalf at the bank.
  • You cannot attend because of travel, illness or work commitments.
  • The bank requires a formal POA to proceed with closure.
  • You want the authority limited to closure rather than ongoing account operation.

Powers that can be included

The POA may include the following powers:

  • Approaching the bank and communicating with its representatives.
  • Submitting the personal account closure request and completing the required steps.
  • Signing the closure forms or declarations that the bank permits to be signed by an authorised person.
  • Delivering any required documents such as identification, address evidence or notification papers.
  • Following up until the bank issues a closure decision or final confirmation.
  • Coordinating with the bank regarding any remaining balance, transfer instructions or closure of linked cards where explicitly authorised.

Drafting notes

Closing an account is different from opening or operating it. The POA should not automatically grant powers to manage the account, withdraw or transfer funds, issue cheques or use online banking unless those powers are expressly required and accepted by the bank.

In some cases it is better to make clear that the purpose is account closure only and that no ongoing operating powers are granted.

Documents required

Please send clear copies of the following:

  • The principal’s passport and Emirates ID or residence permit where applicable.
  • The principal’s address, mobile number and email address.
  • The representative’s passport and Emirates ID where applicable.
  • The full legal name of the bank and branch, where relevant.
  • Account details, such as the account number or IBAN, if available.
  • Any reason for closure or notes from the bank where applicable.
  • A clear list of the powers you want to authorise.
